Rubén Dubrovsky
Co-founder/ Artistic Director/ Conductor
As a conductor, multi-instrumentalist and arranger, Rubén Dubrovsky moves between historical performance practice and the opera and concert repertoire from the Baroque to the 20th century.
He is principal conductor of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich, principal guest conductor of the Cologne Opera and artistic director of the Bach Consort Vienna.
His opera repertoire ranges from Italian Baroque opera to Romantic and modern music theater. A major focus is on the works of George Frideric Handel - including Giulio Cesare, Rinaldo, Agrippina, Orlando, Alcina, Serse, Semele, Saul and Il tronfo del Tempo e del Disinganno - as well as the great Mozart operas from Mitridate and Idomeneo to Le nozze di Figaro, Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni and Die Zauberflöte.
In addition to highlights from the Romantic repertoire such as Verdi’s La Traviata, Borodin’s Prince Igor, Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor and Bizet’s Carmen, he has conducted operas by Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Lully, Scarlatti, Gluck, Rossini, Martín y Soler and Stravinsky.
In the concert hall, his musical repertoire spans from the 18th to the 21st century – from Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven to Mendelssohn, Brahms, Dvořák and Richard Strauss to Bartók, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Weinberg and Nino Rota.
From 2016 to 2023, he directed the Third Coast Baroque ensemble in Chicago. As artistic director of the Mittersill Festival, he focuses on the points of contact between classical music and traditional music cultures from the Salzburg region and other regions of the world.
A defining element of his work is the connection between European Baroque music and Latin American traditions. Programmes such as Bach to the Roots (ORF), Vidala, Sarabande, Musica Chamanica and Viola Latina are dedicated to this dialogue.
The CD Vidala (released by Gramola) was nominated in two categories for the German Record Critics’ Award. Other recordings include Handel’s Messiah (CD Gramola/DVD Naxos), Pace e Guerra (CD Sony/Harmonica Mundi), Monteverdi’s Selva morale e spirituale (DVD ORF), a live recording of Nicolai’s Die lustigen Weiber von WIndsor from the Staatstheater am Gärnterplatz, two Vivaldi releases with Vivica Genaux (CD Sony) and Andreas Scholl (CD Gramola) and television productions such as Winterklang (ORF/3sat).
